OK, anyone who knows me also knows I digs da funk. I was weaned on a steady diet of Parliament/Funkadelic, Rick James, James Brown, Bootsy Collins, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, etc. So, naturally, I became a rabid Prince fan in the mid-80s.
I stayed with his music all the way through--having collected his entire CD catalog (plus a bunch of live and unpublished stuff). He's always been a spiritual guy, which I've never really had a problem with (though I prefer my music secular and full of sexual energy). However, he caught a serious case of religion about 8 years ago that adversely affected his music (in my humble opinion).
The raw energy and incredible musical experimentation gave way to cliched lyrics, repetitive beats, and tired arrangements barely fit for a Britney Spears CD. After his last release, I swore I was done--I don't even remember what it was called; just that it had a hologram of the earth on the cover.
Then a friend told me he had a new album out. I was at Target, and saw it was actually 3 CDs for $12 (one disc is a protege). I figured I'd give the classic funkster one more chance. Holy jumpin' crapfish! The bloody discs are great! Well, mostly great. Disc one is the protege--I can do without it thus far. She has a nice voice, and the lyrics are decent, but Prince is producing without much passion. Makes me wish for the craziness he pulled together for the Jill Jones disc, or the Family.
His two discs are blowing me away so far. Not much experimental work, but a wondrous aural melange of sounds--ranging from smooth jazz to chicken-grease funk to rockin' guitar to sultry ballad (well, without much sultriness now that he's totally PG).
If you've ever been a Prince fan, I strongly suggest you give it a try. C'mon, $12 for 3 discs? You only have to like a single disc's worth of music to be worth the investement...
