Savage Pellucidar by jerrycarr Savage Pellucidar by jerrycarr
Hey gang, sorry I've been out of touch. Lots of personal stuff to work through for the last couple of months. So, I break this long silence with another piece for an upcoming Panthans cover!

Dian, the Beautiful, on the run from Hoojah, the sly; hoping that her emperor David Innes will soon pop in to slay the wily T-Rex! Dang, but I love me some Edgar Rice Burroughs!

Lots of different media. T-Rex is ballpoint and brushpen. Funky roots are just graphite, and Dian is all brushpen. Colored-up and composited in Photoshop, of course!

You know, DOyle wrote The Lost World, then Burroughs wrote about Pellucidar, which was really Land That Time Forgot 2.0, and then a decade or so later King Kong is made. Hmmm.... At any rate, ever since then, people can dream of playing tag with dinosaurs in distant lands far from civilization. This illustration nicely sums it up, and makes the idea sound really cool. My only quibble is that the tyrannosaur's lower jaw should be more V-shaped, although you have the Jurassic Park-era muscle bulge at the mandible done nicely.

Jeez, I loved those books when I was a kid. "Carson of Venus" was my poison.

Oh man! I read all these books when I was in grade school. Abner Perry, The Mahars, the Sagoths, the Horibs. I had the "Carson Napier on Venus" series, too. Great stuff! Thanks.

The ERB universe was the greatest! The Pellucidar series was particularly inventive. I've read 'em multiple times since I was like 12. Glad you dig it!

Thanks man. Y'know, I had to get this piece done in about 4 hours, so I went through my old sketchbooks from when we were roommates, and found the T-Rex AND the graphite log. The girl is the only new illustration. Quick composite and color in photoshop--BAM, there's a cover. Good thing I'm a packrat...

Great job brother. Love it!!!!! Thanks for trading months with me.

Here a cool link I found the other day that you might like. [link] . It doesn't have the covers but it does have a ton of out of print books, especially ERB, that you can read and it's all free. :)

Cheers bro,

Rand

No worries. Did you check out that link I posted. Great source for online Burroughs books. I haven't explored it completely but I'm going to grab a bunch and drop the text in word just in case they go run out of funding or something.

I may be able to make tomorrow. I'm not completely sure yet but I've been penciling the rest of the page for Trickster and been getting 2 done a night so I've only got a couple more to get done. Way faster than I thought I do. :)

Anyway, let me know.

Cheers,

Rand

Thanks mang! I'm not often inspired to draw much detail, but every once in awhile, somethin' weird happens to my drawing hand and more rendering comes out. Then I sober up...

Thanks much! Yah, it's amazing how books written in the 1930s still resonate with folks today. The ERB stuff is my favorite, with Robert E Howard usually neck-in-neck.

Sweet, as always! What is a Panthans cover? Are they reissuing ERB? I am missing Thuvia Maid of mars and they are durned hard to find in the used bookstores.

Isn't it sad about used bookstores? Geez, it seems most of 'em are closing. Very difficult to find the classic old paperbacks in the ones that are left. My fave of the Thuvia covers is the Michael Whelan cover from the late 70s or early 80s. 10 kinds of awesome!

The Panthans are a Baltimore-based ERB fan club that gets together once a month to eat, drink, and talk Burroughs. Every meeting, they put together a journal of ERB-related material. I used to be an active member, but haven't had the time for a few years. I still contribute an occasional cover, though. A few of the collected journals find their way to Bud Plant's website.
