Ah, but it was the costume that got me! The first X-Men comic I ever got was from an old grocery store--and it had the green miniskirted Marvel Girl. I was hooked. I miss that look to this day, even though I know intellectually that is just doesn't work with today's superhero.
I love that costume too, I can't remember who designed... Neal Adams?
My first X-Books were reprints of Jack Kirby/Stan Lee stuff, when I was about 2 or 3 (they were my brother's), and Kirby's stuff reached out and touched me (I guess he is, in comics, my own Personal Jacob).
Y'know what's weird? Growing up, I didn't really like Kirby, Ditko, or even Kane. I was all crazy for John Buscema and Neal Adams. Somewhere between Batman, the Animated Series seasons, I went nuts for Bruce Timm's work. All of a sudden, I "got" Kirby. Now I'm insane for his work! Can't get enough. And don't get me started on Gil Kane. Once I "got" Kane, I just went crazy for all the old-timers. They've taught me sooo much, and I never even met them.
